Brazil confirmed as 2014 hosts

Brazil has today been named Host Nation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ by the FIFA Executive Committee. The South American country was the only one bidding to host the tournament, which was due to be staged on the continent under FIFA's rotation system.

Brazil, who have won the tournament a record five times, hosted the tournament once before in 1950, when they were beaten 2-1 in the Final by Uruguay.

Now they have the chance again, with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter saying that he had been impressed by Brazil's plans for 2014 despite the fact they were the only bidders following Colombia's withdrawal.

"The task was not easy - for us it was a real big challenge to have the same list of requirements and the same conditions for only one candidate than if we had two and perhaps we put the bar higher than if we had two," said Blatter.

"There was an extraordinary presentation by the delegation and we witnessed that this World Cup will have such a big social and cultural impact in Brazil.

"This is the country that has given to the world the best football and the best footballers, and they are five times world champions."

Reaction in Brazil was predictably ecstatic, with the country's president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, summing up the feelings of a nation when he spoke of looking forward to the 'huge task' of preparing for this unique sporting event.

"I would just like to say how happy I am to see Brazil's name on that card," he said. "Organising the World Cup is a huge task and we have far more responsibility weighing on our shoulders than when we arrived here. But we will organise a great World Cup and I am very happy."

Brazil make easy meat of Ecuador

Brazil thumped Ecuador 5-0 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, celebrating their first home match for two years and first at the Maracana stadium since 2000 in style.

Vagner Love gave Brazil a 19th-minute lead just as the 70,000 crowd was getting impatient and the five-times world champions added four goals in a 12-minute spell late in the game.

Kaka struck twice, once with an exquisite curling shot and another with the help of a goalkeeping blunder by Daniel Viteri, and Ronaldinho and Elano also found the net.

The result was rough justice on Ecuador, who controlled the game for nearly one hour and threatened to snatch a point until Brazil's late flourish.

Celeste Olímpica estréia recebendo a Bolívia no Estádio Centenário

No lado chileno, a expectativa é surpreender no Monumental.

Além disso, 280 "barras bravas" - torcedores violentos do país - terão a entrada proibida no estádio.

ARGENTINA X CHILE

PERU X PARAGUAI

Estádio: Monumental, Lima (PER)
Data/hora: 13/10/2007 - 22h (de Brasília)
Árbitro: Carlos Eugênio Simon (BRA)
Auxiliares: Valter José dos Reis (BRA) e Marco Antônio Abade (BRA)

PERU: Butrón, Galliquio, Acasiete e Rodríguez; Vílchez, De la Haza, Solano, Vargas e García; Farfán e Pizarro. Técnico: José del Solar

PARAGUAI: Villar, Caniza, Julio César Cáceres, Da Silva e Morel Rodríguez; Vera, Barreto, Víctor Cáceres e Riveros; Valdez (Cardozo ou Achucarro) e Cabañas. Técnico: Gerardo Martino

Italy won their fourth world crown in Germany, beating France on penalties in Berlin. If Zinedine Zidane's red card was the Final's defining image, Italy's triumph would be remembered as a team effort with ten different Azzurri players finding the net. It was also a special month for Germany, the goals of Miroslav Klose helping secure third place in a tournament memorable for the festival mood across the host country.

The United States staged a hugely successful 15th FIFA World Cup that became the best attended in history and ended with Brazil celebrating their first world title since 1970. Forwards Romario and Bebeto were the Brazilians' star performers while Roberto Baggio shone equally brightly for Italy despite his penalty miss that concluded the first ever Final shoot-out. While Sweden finished third, the undoubted surprise package were their fellow semi-finalists Bulgaria.

When Lothar Matthaus lifted the FIFA World Cup for Germany, it was an undoubted triumph for Franz Beckenbauer, who became only the second winner of the trophy as both player and coach. If low on goals, Italy 1990 was certainly high on drama - from the feats of Italy's top scorer Toto Schillaci via the tears of England's Paul Gascoigne to the historic run of Roger Milla's Cameroon to the quarter-finals.
